I have many warm memories of meeting Soumitra at the home of his brother Subrata in Boston. His smile lit up the room.

Soumitra ia among the most wonderful people I have ever met. Not merely friendly but always devoted to others, he lives on as an inspiration. He is the kind of person of whom it is said that they don’t really die: they go on living in another dimension.
It was my privilege to meet this extraordinary family through my close friendship in New York with Soumitra’s older brother Subrata. When I told Subrata of my plan to do journalistic reporting in India, he put me in touch with his parents and siblings in Kolkata and New Delhi,
I met Soumitra’s sister Sumitra and her husband Hiranmay in New Dellhi, along with their adorable little boy Ananda, 3 years old at the time. I had a rewarding time with them and with Soumitra and parents Sati and Manikuntala in their home in Kolkata. The visit with all of them was unforgettable, as it was with many other relatives in Kolkata, and later Amitabha and Margaret in Boston, with their irresistibly likable boys Paul and Danny (7 and 5 when I met them). Three generations of a phenomenal family, continuing on with Subrata’s son Rittick (Ricky), Sumitra’s two sons Ananda and Arijit, and Soumitra’s children Mia and Shayon.
Whenever I think of Soumitra, I still picture him in his early twenties. Then as later, he was welcoming, engaged with others, always ready with information about getting around Kolkata, about Bengali and Indian politics, music (especially music), Tagore, university studies, the national library, films. Like the other members of his family whose expertise and commitments are not limited to their chosen fields of study, Soumitra stands out not only in biology but in music, in education, in engagement with his students and with others, and his fundamental political commitment to fairness and justice for all, especially through education. I hope we have a recording of his singing Tagore.
My best thoughts are with his wife Kaajal, and their children Mia and Shayon. As I’m sure they know, we haven’t lost him: the things he stood for, guided by a basic sense of decency, remain with us.

"It is not the years in your life, but the life in your years," an adage attributed to many great men, is what comes to mind on reading about Soumitra's well-lived life. Exceling as a family man, shining in the Arts through his passion for music, and leaving an indelible mark as an Academician of much worth, he encompassed it all. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, my childhood friend, Kaajal, and his beautiful children, Mia and Shayon. I am repeating a private message that I sent to her: What a lovely and well deserved tribute this is! A remarkable, well-led life. Soumitra must be smiling down on us from his lofty abode. Hugs, Kaajal, Mia, and Shayon. Regards, Sara Aijazuddin
