Obituary of Robert M. Babbitt, Jr.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert M. Babbitt, Jr., who departed this world on January 22, 2024, in Columbia, SC, at the age of 86. Born in Orlando, FL, to Robert M. and Alice Pyke Babbitt, Sr., Robert's remarkable journey through life touched the lives of many. At the tender age of 16, Robert embarked on a path of service, leaving home to join the army. Although initially sent home, his determination led him back at 17, marking the beginning of an illustrious military career. Robert's duties took him abroad to Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, and he also served at various bases, including The Citadel, Letter Kenny Army Depot, Fort Stewart, Fort Gordon, Fort Benning, Fort Bliss, and Fort Huachuca. His loyalty to his soldiers of the 1st Cavalry Division and courage under fire earned him a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with V-Device and the Republic of Vietnam’s Cross of Gallantry with Palm Device. He also was recognized through nearly another 18 Unit and Service commendations. His commitment earned him the rank of Master Sergeant, and he retired in 1976 after 22 years of distinguished service.
Upon retirement, Robert transitioned to civilian life and settled in South Carolina. He embraced a new role as the transportation planner for the Division of Motor Vehicle Management of S.C., showcasing his adaptability and skills beyond the military. Later, he was recruited to the SC Department of Natural Resources as Chief Supply Officer, where he served for 15 years before retiring once again in 1999.
Robert was not only a seasoned military professional but also a master automotive technician and had a passion for home renovation. He invested his time coaching baseball for his sons and nephews, avidly following his grandchildren's pursuits across South Carolina, Georgia, Texas and New Hampshire. He always enjoyed outdoor activities such as golfing, fishing, crabbing, and shrimping, particularly in the coastal waters of SC.
Preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Yong Ja "Cha" Babbitt, in 2000, and four sisters – Marion Vargo, Gloris Yarnell, Lee Troxell, and Geraldine Cipirano. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Sandra, and four children, Robert M. Babbitt III (Pam) of Ocala, FL; Julie A. Babbitt of North Augusta, SC; David J.
