Obituary of Bettye Myers Jeter
Bettye Joyce Myers was born March 22, 1947, to Fred Myers, Sr. and Jessie Mare Dantzler Myers in Tabor City, N.C. She was the eleventh of twelve children. Living in a home filled with love, family, and spirituality, Bettye respected her A.M.E. upbringing.
At an early age, with the support of her brother Fred and sister Marvella, she declared Baha’i Faith in 1994.
She graduated from Douglass High School in 1964 and Elizabeth City State University in 1968 with her B.S. in Reading. Later, she earned credit from Winthrop University and The University of South Carolina with a focus on Reading. She continued her education and received her Master’s (plus 30) of Education in Reading in 1997 from Clemson University. She worked unit retirement, beginning her career at The Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, D.C., to teaching, G.E.D. preparation, Adult Education, and JTPA Coordinator in S.C. School Districts and University.
The family was an integral part of her Life. She loved unconditionally. Mama, Bettye, Aunt Bettye, or Grandma were often spoken with love, sincerity, and affection by her children, family, and friends.
She was unfortunately preceded in death by her son, Samuel Jeter, Jr.
She is survived by daughters Jessica Jeter and Erika Wider (Jeffrey); brother William D. Myers (Wilhelmina); grandchildren Brandon J. Wider, Jeffrey J. Wider, Summer D. Calhoun, and Sarah J. Calhoun; extended godchildren and a host loving nieces, nephews, and family members.
