Obituary of Ruby Campbell Hooker

Mrs. Ruby Campbell Hooker went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, October 5, 2023.  She was born on February 5, 1933 in Lykesland, South Carolina to Willie Cleve and Maggie Roberts Campbell.

The funeral service for Ruby Campbell Hooker, will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 9:00 AM at Thompson Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Rd, Columbia, SC 29209, with burial in the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Thompson Funeral Home.

Ruby graduated from Columbia High School before working as a secretary to the Post Chaplain of Ft. Jackson for several years. In 1952, she married John L. Hooker and the two cherished 71 years together. They worshiped and served in Macedonia Baptist Church of Columbia and in a number of other Baptist churches during their life together.   

Their life in Florida was filled with amazing opportunities of Christian service as well as hunting and fishing.  Ruby worked in churches, Christian schools, and served as Church Organist, and John enjoyed solo and choir music as well as serving as Deacon for many years.  John L. was Vice President of McDonald Air Conditioning, Inc. for almost 40 years before his retirement and their return to Columbia.

After returning to Columbia, Ruby served as secretary at Windsor United Methodist Church, Bayview Baptist Church, and Columbia College.  She then served as Media Specialist at Spring Valley Baptist Church where she and John L. were members and served in various positions.  After Ruby re-retired, she and her John L. enjoyed years of membership and worship at First Baptist of Columbia.

Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Ruby and John L. enjoyed their lives together filled with CARING, LOVING, AND SERVING!

Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Jodi Lynn Keller (Ken); son, Kevin D. Hooker (Sabrina); granddaughters, Shannon Barton (Bill), Lesli McMakin (Austin), and Hope Bizzaco (Anthony); great-grandchildren, Collin Pfennig, Karter Barton, Anthony Bizzaco III, and soon to be born John Waylon McMakin; sisters, Mary Maresca and Sarah Watterson; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, numerous cousins, her church family and many friends who will miss her dearly.   Ruby is predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Campbell; her husband, John L. Hooker; her son, John Kenneth Hooker; her brother, Alvin Campbell; her sister, Nita Jacobs; and granddaughter, Kimberly Keller.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia Television Ministry, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201, in Ruby’s memory.
