Obituary of James C. Shirey

Mr. James C. Shirey “Jim”, age 89, husband of Judy K. Shirey, went to be in his eternal home on April 2, 2023.   

Jim was born in New Brookland, (West Columbia) South Carolina on December 19, 1933, son of the late Edgar M. Shirey and Eva Mae Stewart.  Jim served in the SC National Guard from 1950 to 1952 and the US Navy from 1952 to 1956.  He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 31 years of employment and was a member of Central Church of the Nazarene since 1956.  In addition, he served as a member of the Post 79, American Legion for several years.  Jim was a devoted husband, father, and Pop Pop who raised his children in church faithfully.  Jim was a humble, kind, generous, loving man who loved the Lord with all his heart.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoying Sunday dinners.  His favorite hobbies were fishing and coaching softball.   

Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Judy; his children, Michael James Shirey (Nancy), Janet Ellisor (Larry), Karen Johnson (Greg), and David Russel Shirey; his grandchildren, Christopher Shirey (Jenn), Tyler Gilroy (Nicole), Kelly Truluck (Justin), Dr. Chadwick Barrs (Margaret), Cody Barrs, Stephanie Anderson (Jesse), and Tabatha Butler (Terry); ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sandra McLaurin and Sherry Condrey (Wayne); and one brother, Edward Randolph “Ranny” Shirey. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Shirey; and brother, Lonnie Charles “Bud” Shirey.   

Funeral Services will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2023, at Central Church of the Nazarene, conducted by Pastor Brent Walker and Pastor Richard Coleman.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.  A private family burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens.  

Pallbearers will be Christopher Shirey, Tyler Gilroy, Steve Shirey, Justin Truluck, Dr. Chadwick Barrs, and Cody Barrs.  Honorary Pallbearers are Larry Ellisor and Greg Johnson.   

Memorials may be made to Central church of Nazarene, 100 S. Woodside Parkway (Hwy 1 at I-26), West Columbia, SC 29170.  

Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family.
