Obituary of L.D. Allen
Lacy Drewy "LD" Allen, Jr. joined his wife of 53 years, Mary Elizabeth Hall Allen and his son, Larry Drewy Allen in their heavenly home on Sunday, March 26, 2023 just 33 days shy of his 100th birthday. In addition to his wife and son, LD was predeceased by his parents, Lacy Drewey Allen, Sr. and Minnie Lee Digh Allen; and his brother, Billy Mac Allen. His is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Elizabeth Allen; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Hall; brother and sister-in-law, John Esper and Rita Hall; brother and sister-in-law, Joe Curtis and Faye Hall; nieces, Kayla Hall Sloan (John) and Donna DeBrew; a nephew Johnny Hall (Sherry); and great-nephew, Terry Sloan (Marley).
LD was born in Alexander Mills, NC ON April 28, 1923. He graduated from Bessemer City High School in NC in 1939. He served in the US Navy from 1942-1946 on the USS Dobbin as a Supply Officer Store Keeper 1st Class. He also graduated from Greenwood College of Commerce in 1948 and attended and graduated from the Wisconsin School of Banking in 1964. He spent 35 years in a career in banking. He retired from Bankers Trust in 1983 as Vice President and Assistant Controller.
Mr. Allen held many civic positions throughout his lifetime. He was president of the local Lions Club, Exchange Club, and Midlands Chapter of NABAC. He was listed in Who’s Who Banking in 1968 and 1973. LD was a Mason from 1949 and served as Worshipful Master 1955.
One of his greatest joys in life besides his family was serving his Lord and Savior through working in his local church. He was an active member of Broadacres Baptist Church for almost 59 years. LD was ordained as a deacon in 1954 and served as a deacon in every church in which he was a member. At Broadacres he also served as Chairman of the deacons several times. In addition to being a deacon he was a Trustee, church clerk, Training Union Director, Sunday school teacher and member of numerous committees. In 2020, Broadacres Baptist Church bestowed the honor of Trustee Emeritus on him in recognition of his decades of faithful service to God and His church.
LD was known for his wisdom and his humor. People that knew him came to him for advice both for business and spiritual matters. He loved to share his knowledge and would help when he could.
LD also loved to leave a smile on the faces of anyone he came in contact with. He loved to tell jokes and was always looking for an opportunity to make someone smile.
