Obituary of Gwendolyn Baker Pitts

M. Gwendolyn "Gwyn" Baker Pitts passed away September 29, 2022. We are in full confidence that after her last breath here she took her next breath in heaven with Christ.

Gwyn was born July 17, 1940 in Dalton, GA to Claire and Earl Baker. She married her husband in 1961 after meeting him in 1959. They had 2 wonderful sons together.

She was born with a clef palate and lip causing her to have her 1st surgery at 4 weeks of age. At 18 years of age Vocational Rehabilitation paid for her 3 years of nursing education at Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. She had a versatile career in nursing for many years and 25 years of teaching Health Occupations at Heyward Career Center in Richland District 1. She was awarded the Outstanding Vocational Teacher for SC in 1991. She also served as the treasurer for the SC Vocational Association in 1992.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, SC and taught Sunday School for many years. She and her husband worked with the youth at church for many years and hosted many foreign exchange students.

Gwyn is predeceased by her husband, Lonnie Lewis Pitts; her son, Curtis Edwin Pitts; brother, Herb Baker; and her parents. She is survived by her other son, Christopher Earl Pitts (Carol); along with her grandchildren, Krystal Roe (Rick), Jamie Pitts (Ashley), Justin Pitts, Rebekah Pitts (Josh), Timothy Pitts, Russell Pitts, Amanda Davidson (Eric), and Colt Gunner.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Bryton Roe, Taylor Roe, Alyssa Roe, Brittany Roe, Dalton Roe, Kaden Roe, Phoebe Roe, Chloe Roe, Jax Roe, Lana Pitts, Sadie Pitts, James Davidson, Jason Davidson, Jacob Davidson, McKenzie Pitts, and Paris Pitts; sister-in-law, Lynn Baker; one niece, Michelle; and a special student, William Hankerson.

Services will be on held Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Thompson Funeral Home on Leesburg Road.  Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
