Marilyn Torbett

Obituary of Marilyn Margaret Torbett

Marilyn Margaret Torbett went home to be with the Lord Easter Sunday April 17, 2022, 91 years following her birth on April 13, 1931.  She died peacefully in her sleep at home.

Marilyn was born in Washington DC and grew up in the historic Mayflower neighborhood just a few blocks from the National Zoo.  She attended and graduated from the Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1949.  While in attendance she belonged to a unique sorority, forming lifelong friendships.  She is survived by 6 members of the sorority.  Marilyn loved to travel around the United States and even spent time abroad.  She was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends.  She worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for more than 30 years before retiring to Columbia, SC to be close to her sister, niece and nephew.

She was an aunt who loved like a mother, though she never had children of her own.  Aunt Marilyn, you have left a remarkable legacy here on earth.  Know that you will never be forgotten and will always be loved, not just by the family but all the lives you touched.

You taught us to never give up on our dreams but to persevere no matter how hard the storms may be.

She was predeceased by her father, Robert Elliott Torbett, her mother, Mary M. Mullani Torbett, and her beloved sister, Rose Marie Woods.  Marilyn is survived by her niece, Teresa Marie Woods (Lyndal Haddox), her nephew, Robert Arthur Woods Jr., (Ramona Thatcher); also, her great niece Courtney Woods Ackland, (Tully Ackland), her great, great niece Vesper Quinn Ackland, and god children.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday April 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC  29209, telephone number 803.470.0164.  For those who cannot make the journey, it will be live-streamed.  A link to the service will be available on the Thompson Funeral Home website.    The family will receive visitors prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home.
