Obituary of Patricia Mae Burr Carter

Patricia Mae Burr Carter, 78, of West Columbia, SC, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

Pat was born on June 13, 1943 in Columbia, SC to David Henry Burr and Catherine Davis Burr. A 1961 graduate of Blythewood High School, Pat was active in chorus, was on the yearbook staff, and was the head cheerleader who proudly painted the school mascot Indian chief in the center of the gym floor.

In 1963, Pat met and married the love of her life, Paul Quincy Carter. Three years later, they were blessed with their first child, Teresa Dawn Carter, and in 1972, they completed their family with the birth of their second daughter, Angela Michelle Carter.

Pat’s love was obvious in the devotion she showed her family and dear friends, such as Jackie Price, her best friend of 56 years. Without a doubt, Pat was thrilled to welcome her grandson, Carter Evan Ulmer, in 2003 and could not have been prouder when she was able to watch him graduate high school in May. Her love of being Carter’s Nenah knew no bounds.

Never one to sit still, Pat was instrumental in the development of the Cayce Congaree Carnival that showcased local arts and crafts vendors in Cayce, SC. She was a member of the Trenholm Artist Guild, and the Town and Country Extension Homemakers, where she served as president for 20 years. Pat was a dedicated member of the Family Support Group for 1/151 AAH at McEntire. Pat taught community education classes in calligraphy and crochet. She began working with the art department in the Cantey Building at the SC State Fair and worked her way up to Superintendent of the Cantey Building over her 30 years there.

Pat dedicated her life to being the best wife, mother, Nenah, sibling, aunt and friend she could and was loved by all that knew her. Her zest for life was often shown in the colorful crafts and works of art she created, be it watercolor, Zentangles, scrapbooking, card-making, sewing, cross-stitching or just doodling on a napkin.

Pat is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Paul Carter; her cherished daughters, Teresa Carter and Angela Carter (Robert Hooker); her adored grandson, Carter Ulmer; brother, Mike Burr (Billie); sister, Donna Wright; brother-in-law, Buddy Carter (Kathy); sister-in-laws, Esther Carter and Jennifer Carter; and brother-in-law, Barry Carter (Louise). She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Catherine Burr; her brother, Ronald Burr; brother-in-laws, Sonny Carter, Jan Carter and Ernie Wright; and sister-in-law, Anita Carter. Pat is also survived by many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and several great-greats. Pat loved them all.

Pat’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and doctors on the 8th floor and in the ICU at Lexington Medical Center for the patient, loving care they showed her.
