My thoughts and prayers are with you Carmen, Larry, and other members of the family. Your father was a fine man who cared about those around him and showed that care in small ways like picking up my dad's mail and papers, blowing the driveway etc when my father could no longer do those things. I like the thought of the reunion that must be in flight with Betty, your Dad, Frank and Steve.
Thanks for taking the time to put together the wonderful video - it really gave new insight into who your dad really was.

First Sergeant Thompson was truly one of my personal heroes. He was my JROTC Instructor at Camden High School, and along with Colonel Clark, he set great examples of moral, ethical and professional values that would propel me through my life and my military career. One of my fondest moments as an adult was visiting with my two heroes, First Sergeant Thompson and Colonel Clark many years later at the Clark's home. He has positively shaped the lives of many and served our great country with distinction. Thank you Lord for placing First Sergeant Thompson in my path. May God bless and comfort the Thompson family and their loved ones.
Colonel Eli Ballard, US Army Special Forces (Retired)
I have made a donation in honor of First Sergeant Thompson for this year's Sandhills Purple Heart Dinner, 21 August at the Crown Coliseum Complex.

What a wonderful man Mr. Thompson (aka Opa) was. He was always kind and would give anyone the shirt off his back. He loved his family tremendously and was never afraid to show it. I loved the way he adored Mrs. Thompson. He lived his life as we all should, being kind to one another, blessing each other with love and affection, putting God, family and country first. May God comfort all of you, and know he is having a joyful time in Heaven with Oma, Frankie and Steve. Love y'all!

1SG Thompson made me the man I am today and I owe him; I am thankful that I had the opportunity in my adult life to share that with him in person. There are few people that truly impact my life in such a meaningful way; he was a role-model when I didn't have a one at home; he showed my what family was when family failed me; he demonstrated compassion, kindness, discipline, character, and integrity everyday in how he lived and in his every action. He was not a perfect man but he modeled how to become a perfect man. This world is truly a lesser place with his absence but what a legacy he left behind; I pray that God lined the streets of heaven with every angel to welcome him and that he received the greatest blessing of all and heard "Well done my good and faithful servant!".

First Sergeant Thompson was my JROTC instructor for two years and my drill team instructor for three years. He was a wonderful teacher, leader and friend. He was patient and kind and sweet. He always was in a good mood and never got cross with anyone. I remember a trip to a drill meet in Morganton NC one time. He tried as best he could to keep us all in line, but as usual, the team was a bunch of teenagers. Someone took a pillow from the hotel and Sarge found out about it on the way home. He didn't get angry or upset. He just took the pillow. We found out a few weeks later, he had taken the pillow back to the hotel. He was an awesome person, he will be missed.
