Obituary of Wilborn Leon Smalley

Wilborn Leon Smalley, 95, widow of Bonnie Luquire Smalley, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Mr. Smalley was born in Oconee County to the late George and Nellie Ford Smalley.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Richardson of Lexington and Cathy Marthers (Charlie) of West Columbia; one sister, Rosalie Cromer of Greenwood; special friend, Kenneth Richardson of Lexington; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many relatives and friends. 

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Smalley was predeceased by brothers, Thomas Smalley of Lexington and Larry Smalley of Greenwood; and sisters, Mozelle Hamilton of Chapin and Coateen Gunnells of Greenwood.

During World War II, Mr. Smalley proudly served as a Seaman First Class on the aircraft carrier, USS Hornet, CV-12. He was always willing to talk with anyone about his time in service and quick to let you know about his experiences. He was proud to say that his brother, Thomas, and sister, Coateen, were also serving at the same time. 

Mr. Smalley was a transmission specialist for many years before opening his own business, Smalley’s Small Engine Repair in West Columbia. After retiring, he began a hobby collecting trains and developed an intricate railway system in his garage. He enjoyed working from his garage and friends and neighbors stopping by to “shoot the breeze”.

Mr. Smalley loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He looked forward to family reunions, camping with the Smalley guys, day trips to Greenwood or visits at home.

The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Cindy Winter, Bonnie Morris and Crystal Luzell for their loving care for Mr. Smalley. Many thanks to his friend, Danny Shuler, who kept the wood stove burning in the garage in the winter and the fans blowing in the summer. 

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at The Edge Church, 3220 Platt Springs Road, West Columbia, SC on May 16, 2021 at 3:00pm. Memorials may be made to Chris Myers Children’s Place.
