Columbia, South Carolina - Betty Swygert Coggins, 98, of Columbia, widow of Freeman W. Coggins, passed away on December 28, 2020, at PRISMA Health Midlands.

A graveside burial with COVID restrictions will be held at 3:00 on Sunday, January 3, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Born in Columbia on July 23, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Martha White and Thomas Irwin Swygert. Betty attended Columbia city schools and the University of South Carolina graduating with degrees in English and Education. She taught school and later worked in the Chemistry Department at USC for 21 years. Betty was a dedicated life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she participated actively in a variety of activities and committees.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister Mary S. DesChamps. Survivors include her sons Tommy (Frances), Bill (Susan) and Jack of Hilton Head, SC. Also, survived by her stepson, Freeman Coggins Jr. (Betsy), grandchildren Duncan (Kade), Cameron, Cal, Liz, great granddaughter Amelia, and sisters Sara S. Buck and Jane S. Wrigley, as well as numerous nieces.

The family suggests that memorials be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Columbia. Thompson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
