Uncle Tom, an Amazing Man, a Fantastic Father and a Great Uncle! The funniest and happiest person I’ve ever known, with a Magical ability to bring a sense of Joy and Happiness to everyone he ever met. You couldn’t be around Uncle Tom for more than a few seconds without quickly being overcome with a sense of Joy and Excitement, and feeling like you were a very special person, because Uncle Tom, The Great Chief Whitecloud, made it abundantly clear that It Was SO!!
Growing up, my brothers and sisters, as well as our Mom and Dad, always looked forward with excitement and anticipation to going up to visits with our S.C. Beall cousins, and Uncle Tom and Aunt Ginny. It was always an Amazing Adventure of Fun! The happiest childhood memories of all of us Savannah Bealls were of summer vacations together with the S. C. Bealls at the beach house on Pawleys Island. Those were Magical Days! We never wanted them to end. Those huge, family tribal beach vacations meant so much to all of us that we’ve continued them every year, for well over half a century now!
It was at one of those beach weeks at Pawleys Island when my Uncle Tom gave me my Indian Family nickname… Some of us kids were swimming in the surf, ducking under the waves as they rolled in, when Uncle Tom, Chief Whitecloud, waded out to us and with a huge grin on his face, pointed me out to everyone, with my newly-grown, salt-water dripping mustache, and said he’d just discovered a rare Pawleys Island Sea Otter! The name stuck! And I’ve proudly gone by my family nickname of Otter, and/or Otterman ever since!
Thank you, Chief, for all the Happy Memories, the Great Adventures, the Hilarious Stories and The Wise Life Lessons you shared with all who knew and loved you. You will be Greatly Missed by All.
I look forward to the day when I’ll be joining you and Pop for a heavenly round of golf with Moses and Elijah. And I know you’ve probably already got an incredible beach house in Heaven for all the Family Tribe to share and enjoy for time never-ending.
It’s the end of an era, but a new one has begun.
Love you, Allen and Suzi Beall –( Otterman Allen and Otteress Suzi-Q.)

Pop The funniest man on earth
He was fiercely loyal
A friend to all
Full of dreams and
imagination
Hard to know what
Was truth or exageration!
Full of wonderment of
Nature and humans
But a wise and insightful
Judge of character
He finds a bit of magic
In everyone he meets
Highly likely sprung from
His own intensity
He has a way of making you
feel a sharer of secrets,
A special confidant of sorts
But watch out ,cause he will also
call you on your faults!
He will sit up and watch
and worry
Stand guard if you are sick
Invite you to Christmas dinner
if you have nowhere else to go.
His wit and humor is known
throughout the land.
He has surely learned to smile
through tears and loss
And taught us all to Laugh,
NEVER GIVE UP
and LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND!
He loved us all!

A long and wonderful life for a great man and a good friend. I met Tom " Cheif White Cloud to all that were fortunate enough to
befriend him" in 1982 when we both worked at Merrill Lynch in Columbia SC. He was my mentor,my wise man,and my after work beer drinking pal.So many stories to tell and the light he brought to a room! We shared stories and made some of our own.
Both of us being past football players he shared this little rhyme I've never forgotten. Ha dee taughty,God almighty who the hell are we? flim flam god damn hit that line and see! Well Cheif ....we saw and what a man you were....gonna miss you pal....
I was fortnate to get a call from him a few days before he passed and we reminisced... it was so much fun and I'm grateful for that call. To his children and grandchildren,I want you to know he was a much respected man and you should be so proud to call him your dad. Brett Jones

What a man, what a life. He could change the mood of a room by breaking out in song, telling a story … just by being there. He was a great innocent, “Can a man live without a spine?” and a true philosopher. No one was a stranger, at least not for long. A successful businessman, father, and stepfather to me and many, many others. Even in my sadness I smile as I remember him – inside I feel his smile in return.

Uncle Tom will be greatly missed! My favorite memories are of our summer trips to Pawleys Island. Also just going to the Beall house was always an adventure. Uncle Tom always had great stories. He was also a great listener! He was such a happy person, and he spread happiness to all he came in contact with. Love and peace to all the Bealls. From Dan and Cindy Gay (niece)

My Dad, Tony, always told a story about his first phone contact with Tom after Tom took over Dad’s account. Tom was talking to him about a hotel chain and asking Dad if that chain was out here. Dad asked the name and Tom said, “Raahhhwwwlll Inn.” Dad said, “What?” These same two lines repeated several times with increasing levels of laughter on both ends until finally Dad asked Tom to spell it. It was Royal Inn. Dad and Tom laughed about this for almost 50 years. Periodically one or the other would pop Royal Inn into the conversation at random and they would both laugh and laugh. I would always hear laughter every time Dad talked to the Chief. Dad actually didn’t meet the Chief in person until I think around the1990s but they talked nearly 3 – 4 times a week, even after Tom retired.
When I came to visit Columbia and stayed with Linda, I went to see Tom’s office. When I asked if I could take a photo, Tom said he had better look like he was doing some work.
The Chief always had time to listen, laugh, and support me over the many years our families have been friends. I will miss his huge heart.

This is a tribute to our friend Chief WhiteCloud & his family.
We ‘ll start with our condolences ...
Rest In Peace my friend.
Little did a freshman realize how his life would change when my brother Rich arrived at South Carolina.
As a Finance Major he decided to check out the stock market after classes early in his first semester..
He walked into a Merrill Lynch office on Sumter Street near the campus..
He watched the stock ticker.. he was interested in Itel ( I think?..)
He was asked to sit down..
Chief White Cloud stopped by and talked to him..
He was impressed with Rich’s knowledge.. Rich didn’t buy then.. however they met again a week or 2 later ..
The chief convinced Rich not to buy yet..
That was the start... He had 10 kids!!
Some were Rich’s age..!! Rich had no idea how his life would change..
The Chief had connections throughout the community..
I flew down for football, basketball, baseball games. I too met the Chief..
we played golf.
Some of the sons joined in.
Across from Merrill Lynch was a legendary steakhouse owned by Ike Cogburn...
the line to get in was long..
down the street & around the corner.
The Chief said this is the best place in town..( but they don’t have many seats,-) we may need to sit at the counter... we met Ike..
Ike later moved to highway 378.
A much bigger building.
Every time we came to town we visited Ike..
we were treated as family.
He would fill us in on all the Carolina recruits.
He attended most games. He loved away trips to Kentucky.
He became a good friend.
After playing golf one day & having dinner with the Chief I went to a baseball game..
Coggy & his wife were there . He asked if I’d ever met Coach Tanner. I said no..
He was hitting pop ups in pregame activities to the catcher.
He walked over , shook hands and said stop by anytime son.. Coach Tanner is now Athletic Director Tanner.
that was special.
We met a client of the Chiefs Craig Kelly a sports contract lawyer..
he owned Cockaboose #5..we were later invited for life..
we met opposing coaches & their families...we filled up with bbq & deviled eggs & beer.
Odell owned the pool hall ( “the Palace” on Gervais across from the AT&T building where the Chiefs firm moved.
Odie had the best burgers & fried chicken..
the chief introduced us.. Odies was our first stop after deplaning for years.
He’d save us fried chicken..
we came 700 miles for his chicken..
often it was on the house.!!
The Chiefs best friend from 4th grade on was Del Turner...
Del was a Georgia Bulldog fan.
the Chief was always a Tennessee Volunteer first..
a Carolina & Clemson fan as backups..
Jay Brown was a prize baseball recruit for for Ray Tanners squad..
He was also Del Turners Grandson!!
Both the Chief & Del rooted for the Gamecocks when Jay pitched..
they couldn’t have been prouder...& Carolina went on to win back to back National titles.
Scottie MacRae & brother Duncan owned Yesterdays restaurant in 5 points. Scottie was best friends with Andy Beall.. one of the Chiefs clan.. a contractor, great golfer ,.. and a semi pro beach volleyball player.
We too became best friends.
I think we owe Scottie for about 300 meals..
He never took any money..
We met all the Clouds..
A society of Professional friends who’d met at the No Name deli often after work .,
There was a Green Cloud, a Grey Cloud, Red Cloud, Great Cloud,Silver Cloud , Thunder Cloud, Blue Cloud etc. ( I probably missed some?!).,
Rich was introduced as Student Cloud..I became Telephone Cloud..
Rich later became Alumni Cloud Northeast Cloud... & the Northeast Indian leader..I became Cricket..?( long story)..
Over the years all those friends we made through the Chief were involved in family events, golf outings, tailgates etc.
The Circle of Life..
A Sunday dinner with Virginia Beall years ago started with the entire family sitting down for prayers..then they all talked .. 20 conversations at once..that was the Beall household.
The Chief loved everyone of them..
So my friend you are now sitting at a table in Heaven with many an old friend..
You have an endless cup of the finest scotch... the ice doesn’t melt..
The stories are the best.
I’ll be there soon enough with new stories.
Todd Burro wrote a true story entitled “Heaven is for Real”..a Ministers son visited Heaven..everyone there was young.
Hopefully we’ll enjoy a 20 year old body once more.??one where the legs work, the back doesn’t ache, we can see again without glasses?!!
God finally decided that Heaven could use the Chief to pull together all his old friends..imagine that golf tournament!!
We’re glad we met you all!!

Thanks, Tyler. Just imagine the number of great stories that you can tell when you've known an outstanding individual like The Chief for 47 years. Dave and I have a few thousand of them - and that's without calling on any of the embarrassing ones for him or us. Chief has left a legacy that very few can match, including an extended family that is second to none.

I will be sorry for myself and everyone else that we cannot continue conversations with Tom on all that is to come, but what a rich and loving legacy to hold onto and a living spirit that will keep us inspired by his cheerleading and joking. So beloved and so aware of how much he was adored.
The earliest memories I have of Tom were split between the times I visited the house on Lenevar and the times Gracie would come home from visiting the Beall clan. The Lenevar house was, to say the least, always lively and crowded, but all was incomplete until Uncle Tom made his late morning entrance for breakfast and held audience with all the tribe. He was the human climb-a-thon for all the ambulatory Bealls and the momentary cradler of the newest baby(ies). His booming voice and lively PRESENCE made the rollcall complete and the day was truly underway. Since Aunt Ginny was too young to remember her own daddy, she must have loved seeing the role come to life through Tom’s wonderful portrayal.
When Gracie came home from visiting the Bealls, she always made it a point to sing Tom’s praises - especially to my dad, “Bunny.” No question but that Tom was her favorite son-in-law - I chuckle to know Dad’s eyes would start to roll when he got to listen to all the things Tom did so much better. Tom knew how to flatter Gracie, relax her with a Tom Collins cocktail, and give her hugs and fun. Dad always got to hear about Tom’s latest salary raise (a rare perk for a civil servant like Dad was) or Tom’s buying that huge, deluxe Caprice station wagon (nothing special about our Chevy sedans.) Those were humorous years of comparison. Dad needled Gracie with jokes she didn’t get or appreciate. Tom put her on a pedestal and made her feel like a queen. I doubt if Tom had any idea of this - there was no competition from his end and he was just naturally the charmer.
For all the blessings of the good life and the great family, life dealt Tom truly horrible losses starting with the sudden death of his beloved Ginny. Every parent prays to outlive their children and yet he suffered the unthinkable twice. He rose to each challenge and kept going - he was always true to his role as “Chief,” not only patriarch to his own kids, but embracing nieces and nephews as his own. Our phone calls always included some assertion from him that “We’re FAMILY!”
We really enjoyed seeing Tom in the later years as he presided as Chief at family weddings and at his memorable “Zoo party.” I think Kim’s boyfriend and date for one of those occasions was really sorry things didn’t last so he could enjoy the entertaining rituals of the Beall clan in future years!
No one can continue Tom’s great Southern drawl and delivery (well, Andy sounds pretty close) and his endless collection of great stories. Most of them were probably even true! I will longingly look for him amidst the azaleas at the Masters (and assume he’s in the 19th Hole if I don’t see him) or in an adjacent booth at Outback. I hope there are lots of treats to pamper his sweet tooth in “Pagan-ville.” I suspect Ginny will use her angelic influence to get him a pass into her “Heaven.” I’m sure that Dad will give him a warm handshake for taking care of his girls (all Tom Collins and Caprices forgotten), and Mama will play “Old Man River.” No doubt Gracie will enjoy his pampering again, too.
