Obituary of Gary Elbert Greer, Sr.
Gary Elbert Greer, Sr., 84, of West Columbia, passed away on Friday June 12, 2020. Born in Shumway, AZ on September 25, 1935, he was the son of the late Dansey Marel and Leone Rose Greer, and the husband of the late Nelda Geraldine “Gerry” Hill Greer. Gary proudly served in the US Army for 24 years, where he retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class. After leaving the military, he began a second career with Wells Fargo, eventually retiring from there as well. Gary was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church in West Columbia. He will forever be remembered as a man who loved God, his family, church family, and country.
Mr. Greer is survived by his daughter, Cindy Loupis of Chattanooga, TN; sons, Michael K. Greer (Debbie) of Lexington, Edward A. Greer of West Columbia, and Jeff Greer (Brenda) of West Columbia; grandchildren, James Myers (Hillary), Charity Myers, Susan Teague (Andrew), Stephen Myers, Stephanie Clark (John), Dale Greer (Stephanie), Joshua Greer, Kathryn Greer, and Jacob Greer; great-grandchildren, Isla Myers, Charlotte Myers, Madison Clark, Shane Clark, Allison Greer, and Lilliana Greer; and a brother, Darwin Greer of New Harmony, UT.
In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by his son, Gary Greer, Jr.; sisters, Winona Denning and Karen Greer; and brothers, Shane Greer and Ronnie Greer.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Greer’s caregivers, Corinne and Priscilla.
Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Tuesday, June 16th at Thompson Funeral Home- Lexington.
The funeral service for Mr. Greer will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, June 17th at Grace Baptist Church, with Dr. Bill Egerdahl officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
