Obituary of Winifred Morris Mangan

Funeral services for Winifred Morris Mangan, age 92, will be held at Thompson Funeral Home on Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 2:00 o'clock with a private burial following the service at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Pastor Dennis Banks of Shandon Baptist Church will officiate. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Winnie passed away to be with the Lord, peacefully in her sleep, in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 2, 2019. Winnie was born May 10, 1926, in Olar, South Carolina, the daughter of Furman Vanice Morris and Edna Sanders Morris. While attending Armstrong Junior College in Savannah, she met the love of her life David Joseph Mangan, a U.S. Army Air Corps lieutenant stationed at Hunter Air Force Base. They were married immediately after Dave was discharged in 1946 and Dave enrolled at Clemson College. Their first child, Suzette, was born while Winnie and Dave were living in Clemson. After Dave's graduation from Clemson they moved to Greenville where their second child, Stephanie, was born. While in Greenville, the family attended and were members of Augusta Road Baptist Church. They later moved to Columbia and in 1962 joined Shandon Baptist Church where Winnie was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class and was on the church homebound, prayer and flower committees. Winnie was twice elected president of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary. She was a member of the Jaycettes and the Gateway and Larkspur garden clubs. Winnie loved being a homemaker and enjoyed decorating, antiques, gardening and reading.

For the past three years Winnie was a resident of the Columbia Presbyterian Community. She is survived by two daughters, Suzette Mangan-Bryson (Thomas J. Jr.) and Stephanie Mangan; and sister in-law, Martha Mangan of Santa Cruz, CA. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Franklin Ray Morris and Ervin Sanders Morris; and three sisters, Myrtice Morris Robinson, Louise Morris Cave and Gloria Boylston Cooly; and beloved husband, Dave of 72 years.
