Obituary of Randolph E. Meek

Randolph E. (Ebbie) Meek of West Columbia, SC died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the age of 76.

Ebbie is survived by his wife Terry Meek; her two sons Patrick Evans (Marissa), their daughters Reese and Cameron and her son Reid Evans.

Ebbie is also survived by his three daughters, Mandy Snow (John) of Edisto, SC and their children John Randolph (Katie), Preston, Cooper, Carlton and Mollye; Patsy Boggs and her daughter Claire; and Catherine Buchanan (Blake) and their children Lily Cate and Knox. Ebbie is survived by one great grandchild, Calvin Snow.

He is also survived by two brothers, Nelson Meek (Linda) of Chapin, SC and Roy Meek (LaQuita) of Louisiana, and by many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his daughters’ mother, Edwa Meek. He was preceded in death by his sister Vivian Jackson and his best friend Doug Locklair.

Ebbie served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ebbie returned home to Charleston, SC and worked at the Navy Shipyard before starting his long career in the general contracting business, eventually starting his own construction company United Construction. He also worked for C. F. Evans and Northlake Construction.

Ebbie grew up fishing, crabbing, shrimping and harvesting oysters from the rivers around James Island and John’s Island.  He loved the ocean and almost started his own crabbing business, like his brother did in Louisiana. His favorite river, the Stono River, will be his final resting place when the family spreads his ashes there. He always said, “I fished them so much that they should have a turn at me.” Ebbie enjoyed woodworking and built two wooden boats, Adirondack chairs, and numerous bird houses.

Ebbie, known to his grandkids as Fatso, was so proud of all of them; he loved them dearly and never missed an opportunity to call and tell you a funny story about them.  Ebbie enjoyed life, had lots of friends and loved to make people laugh. Ebbie claimed he didn’t like cats, but he loved the two that would sit on his lap every day, Oreo and Kathryn.
