Obituary of Neil A. Jones

Neil Allen Jones, 36, of Columbia, SC passed into the loving arms of God on Saturday, June 30, 2018 after a lifelong, courageous battle with clinical depression.  Born on June 24, 1982 in Myrtle Beach, SC to Henry Allen Jones and Janice Bolchoz Broom, he is survived by his parents; his sister, Jennifer Jones June; brother-in-law, Ashton T. June; nephew, Ashton C.A. June; stepfather, Bob Broom; stepmother, Pam Jones; stepsister, Tracie Broom; stepbrother, Kevin Broom; stepsister, Tara Trotter; stepbrother, Tradd Trotter; stepsister, Traci Roseberry; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; and his beloved cat, Roxy, whom he called his angel.

Neil was a member of Columbia Freewill Baptist Church, an honors graduate of Midlands Technical College in Computer Technology, and an employee of Capgemini.  He was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the National Society of Leadership and Success.  He was a gifted scholar who helped others in need, particularly the sick and elderly.  He loved his family, books, fine food, animals, weight lifting and computer gaming. Neil had a dry, sarcastic sense of humor that delighted many.

His mother and family are deeply grateful to Pastor and Mrs. Ernest Barnes, and other members of Neil’s extended church family for their love and spiritual guidance; Dr. Robert J. Ornelas, who assisted Neil in his mental health struggle; and, the professional and caring public service members from the coroner’s office and law enforcement agencies.

Visitation will be on Friday, July 13, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Thompson Funeral Home, Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC.  A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 14 at 2:00 pm at Columbia Freewill Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Neil’s memory to the National Alliance on Mental Illness- NAMI SC, Oliver Gospel Mission, or simply extend kindness to those struggling with mental health issues.
