Obituary of Madgie Ruth Settle Leggett

Ruth S. Leggett, 95, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia, SC.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Presbyterian Community of Columbia, 700 DaVega Dr., Lexington, SC at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 21, 2018.  Interment will be in New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Biggersville, MS.

Born September 17, 1922 in Biggersville, MS, she was the daughter of William and Barbara Hill Settle. She lived many years in Oxford, Mississippi and then in Cheraw, SC. Since 1998, the Presbyterian Community of Columbia, SC was her home.

She was predeceased by her husband, Isom William Leggett; brother, George Settle; and sister, Bessie Doty.  She is survived by her daughter, Elaine L. Craft, of Columbia, SC (formerly Cheraw, SC); and son, Calvin William Leggett of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Calvin Leggett Craft of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Marjorie Mann (Margie) Craft of Indianapolis, IN, Mary McFadden Craft Lawson (Mary Mc) of Cincinnati, OH and Lydia Elaine Leggett of New York City, NY; and five great grandchildren.

A graduate of Biggersville High School and Wood Junior College, she worked for the Red Cross during World War II, was an active volunteer and leader of the Easter Seal Society in MS, and participated in multiple civic and literary organizations. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Churches in MS and Cheraw, SC. For more than 30 years, she enjoyed spending several months each year at her second home in Hendersonville, NC. She was an avid reader and enjoyed travel, performing arts, and card games with family and friends.
