Obituary of Armando B. Ferrer

Armando Bartolome Ferrer, Jr. of West Columbia, South Carolina died on Monday, August 17, 2015 at the age of 74. Known as "Mandy" to his family and friends, he was born in Havana, Cuba on November 14, 1940 to the late Armando Ferrer, Sr. and Mercedes Garcia Ferrer. After graduating from Belen Jesuit School in Havana, Mandy came to the United States in the fall of 1958 to study English at Louisiana State University. He returned to Cuba just a few times before remaining in the United States permanently after the 1960 Cuban Revolution. In addition to LSU, Mandy attended Clemson College, Southern Polytechnic Institute, and the University of South Carolina earning degrees in Industrial Engineering and Applied Studies. After a 38-year career in manufacturing, Mandy retired as Plant Manager from John Deere. Not one to remain idle, Mandy began teaching Conversational Spanish at Midlands Technical College. Mandy is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jeanie Farrar Ferrer; his son, Richard Ferrer; and granddaughter, Katie Ferrer. He also leaves behind loving relatives and numerous friends whom he considered his family. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2015 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Rd. A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palmetto Place Children's Shelter, P. O. Box 3395, Columbia, SC 29230 or to the Carroll A. Campbell Neuropathology Lab, 173 Ashley Avenue, BSB Suite 403, Charleston SC 29425.
