Obituary of George Wesley Rabon

COLUMBIA - George Wesley Rabon, USMC. A graveside funeral service with military honors for George Wesley Rabon, USMC, will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, September 14, 2015 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Major Richard Jones and Pastor Doug Self will officiate. The family will greet friends from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Mr. Rabon, 78, was born in Columbia to the late Robert E Lee and Georgianna Brazell Rabon. He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps and was deployed in the Korean Conflict. He left the Marines only to be closer to his loving wife and family. He played a large role at the Salvation Army Church, where he was Corps Sergeant Major. He and his family served the community through the organization. Always wanting to be involved, he was also Chaplain for the VFW Post 641 and a member of the Cooties. No matter the position or organization, he fulfilled his duties grandly and honorably, right down to coaching his grandson's tee ball team. He was kind and caring, a true reflection of God's love. As his health declined in his later years, he still made sure he was in God's house every Sunday morning to hear His word. He was filled with knowledge of scripture and wisdom that only comes from years of doing God's work. To know him was to love him. Countless friends and family members whose lives he's touched can attest to that. He is survived by his sons, George "Buck" Rabon (Barbara) of Hopkins; Timmy Rabon of Columbia; daughter, Angela M. Carter of Columbia; grandson, David W. Carter; granddaughters, Jennifer Rabon, Julie Rabon, Amanda Carter, and Angel Rabon; and great-grandson, Mason Carter, along with 3 other great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Jerry Rabon (Jean) of Columbia; Robert "Cricket" Rabon of Saluda. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 45 years, Betty M. Rabon, and son, Jimmie David Rabon, PFC, USMC.
