I worked alongside Mike in Allied Air’s Product Engineering department.
Looking back, and doing the math, Mike’s desk and mine were never more than 50 feet apart for 18 years.
For me, Mike was something that was constant and good in my life.
At work, Mike focused on part and product designs.
Mike enjoyed a challenge and was a true expert at his craft.
To paraphrase a line from the movie ‘A Christmas Story’ -
‘Mike worked in CAD the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master.’
Mike had the desirable reputation for being obsessed with details.
If you needed something done right, you wanted Mike to work on it.
However, if you came to Mike for his help, you needed to be prepared to sit for a moment.
Mike had stories. Mike had observations. Mike had questions.
Most of all, Mike seemed to enjoy sharing about his family.
He would share the good, the occasional bad, and certainly the uplifting.
It was obvious that he loved his family deeply.
And that everything he did in life, in some way or another, was for his family.
Mike was a great soul. Mike was a thinker.
He had incredible compassion for his fellow man.
And after any talk with Mike. You knew that you had room to grow as a human.
Those around Mike, knew he was a talented, concise communicator.
He could convey volumes through just a sigh.
You knew exactly how Mike felt with this simple expression.
There was the frustrated sigh - when the computer locked up while saving the last hours’ worth of work.
There was the sarcastic sigh.
And certainly, the best, was the sigh followed by a brief pause and then a hearty chuckle.
But, for me the most important thing Mike ever said to me was -
“Jeff, you’re a friend, can I get your thoughts on something?”
Mike, the world needs more friends like you.
Mike, you will be missed.
This solemn sigh is for you – Sigh.

I worked with Mike at Allied, and though I’ve been retired for a number of years, I know how much the company and his co-workers will miss him. I worked with a lot of designers in my 50+ years in the HVAC business and Mike was one of a very few who really knew how to run a design drafting system, rather than let it run him. He was also good to work with in always being straightforward, giving his honest opinion to help move a project forward. He was a valuable asset in so many ways and I was very fortunate to have worked with him.
