Betty Lou Mathias

Obituary of Betty Lou Mathias

Betty Lou Fields Mathias went to join her husband Earl (Buddy) Mathias on December 30, 2023. He entered into eternal rest in September of 1998.

She was born in Lamar, SC Darlington County, to parents Walter and Veola Fields who are deceased. She graduated from Lamar High School, a member of the Beta Club and attended Draghons Business in Columbia. She retired from the SC Highway Department after 30 years. She was a member of Mt. Horeb UMC for a long time. She was the secretary for Sunday School class, and was Communion Steward and Altar Leader for 25 years. She served on several committees and was a member of Faith Circle and was chosen as Woman of the Year. She was a member of the Crafters and the group there helped stuff 30 pillows a month at the USO for Veterans, servicemen, and women, as they came and went at the Airport. They were delivered by Betty and friend Peggy the same day finished. Betty was a chosen Member of the year of the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved her church and was a fun loving lady. She and Buddy lived at Lake Murray at the home they had built in 1968. They enjoyed fishing, boating and gardening. Betty was the glue that kept things together. She kept the Class of 47 from Lamar High School reunion together yearly after the 57th year. It seems she was the last one left.
