Obituary of Landry Lars Layson

Landry Lars Layson, 68, of West Columbia, South Carolina passed away May 2, 2018. He was born on April 12, 1950 in Eatonton, Georgia to Hugh and Osha Mayrene Gambrell Layson.

His is a light that will never go out. Landry lived a life full of color. Having grown up a child of the world, he lived the first part of his life in Italy, Germany, Alaska, Texas, Tennessee, Washington and Georgia; his playgrounds were castles and deserts. Likewise, his professional life was filled with adventure, having worked with world leaders at the G8 Summit, Pope John Paul II, and well known musicians and artists from around the globe.

As the lighting director at SC Educational Television for 25 years and a freelance gaffer, his reputation as a consummate professional was known both locally and nationally, enhancing the everyday images that came across the screen and into our homes and our lives.

Landry is survived by his wife of 19 years, Renee Shumpert Layson; son, Travis Layson of Lexington; daughter, Johannah Layson Gage (Derek) of Camden; grandchildren, Connor and Josie Layson of Lexington; nephew Eddy Timm (Patricia) of Ooltewah, TN and niece Tammy Sadler of Asheville, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Linda Hilliard.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 5 at 3:00pm at Platt Springs United Methodist Church, 3215 Platt Springs Road, West Columbia, SC with a visitation to follow.

Although he believed everyone brought joy into the room - some when they entered, some when they left - he would never say "good-bye" but rather "good-bye for now".

As you wish . . .
