Obituary of Ray York

Ray York LEXINGTON—A memorial service for Julius Rayfield (Ray) York, 90, of Lexington, SC, will be conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, February 27, 2011, at Cayce United Methodist Church, Cayce, SC, with the Rev. Michael Henderson and Rev. Susan Culler officiating. The family will receive visitors after the service. Interment will be 1 P. M. Monday, February 28, 2011, at the Summerfield Methodist Church Cemetery in Galax, Virginia. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family. Mr. York passed away on Friday, February 25, 2011. He was the son of the late Ernest Calvin and Alma Cox York. Mr. York was born July 30, 1920, in Greensboro, NC, and attended Greensboro High School. Mr. York served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany, Belgium and France. During this time he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He retired from Belk Department Stores. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Helen F. York. They affectionately called each other "Chubs" and "Nubs." He is also survived by his sisters Sethelene Stout of Greensboro, and Georgia Connell of Warrenton, NC, and many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. York was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Lee Cheek, Greensboro, and two brothers E.C. York, Jr. and Tom York , both of Charlotte, NC. As a member of Cayce United Methodist Church, he served as an usher for many years and also on the Church Board. Ray loved his church and God and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class for many years.
