Obituary of Lawrence Miles

COLUMBIA-A funeral service for Lawrence Beverly "Bev" Miles, 79, of Columbia, will be held at 4 o'clock on Thursday, March 17, 2011, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, with Mr. Dow B. Erwin officiating. Interment will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family requests no flowers or memorials, but to do a random act of kindness. Family and friends will be received Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 o'clock at the funeral home. Mr. Miles died Monday, March 14, 2011. Born May 6, 1931 in Columbia, he was the son of the late Charlie Brown Miles, Sr. and Sallie Ann Aughtry Miles. He was an employee of Swift Oil Company and S&S Cafeteria, Gervais Street in Columbia from which he retired. Mr. Miles loved the outdoors and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed taking trips to the mountains and beach. He was very fond of his little white Maltese "Emily" and enjoyed gardening. Survivors include his sisters, Hazel M. Leitner (John) of Blythewood, Shirley M. Gibbs of Elgin, and Carolyn M. McLeod (Bobby) of Blythewood, he was also survived by four nephews and eight nieces. Mr. Miles was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Dorothy "Dottie" M. Tucker, Charlie Brown Miles, Jr., Mary Elizabeth Self, Huey Thomas Miles, Eleanor M. Glisson, and Frances M. Knauer. Mr. Miles was also preceded in death, by three nephews. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at White Oak Manor of Columbia, where he had lived for the last five years. Especially their director Scott Neal, their Director of Nursing, Jennifer Colette, their Social Worker Vanessa Brown, and their Financial Administrator, Donna Langley. Also a special thanks to his nurses and caregivers, Elizabeth Wilson, Barry Roberts, Mark Dunn, and others too numerous to mention.
