Obituary of James Bill

James William "Bill" Joy WEST COLUMBIA—Funeral services for James William "Bill" Joy, 92, of West Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Holland Avenue Baptist Church with military honors. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Wilson. Burial will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Mr. Joy, beloved husband of Margaret McCain Joy, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011. Born in Portsmouth, VA, he was the son of the late Charles Butler Joy and Kathleen Tarrer Joy. He was a lifelong area resident and a member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church for 50 years. Mr. Joy was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the 178th Artillery and was a member of the military band. He retired from the U. S. Veterans Administration. He also played as a percussionist with a number of bands in the Columbia area. Surviving in addition to his wife, Margaret M. Joy of West Columbia; daughters, Peggy Edens (J.P.) of Columbia and Donna Haltiwanger (Charles) of Fletcher, NC; four grandchildren, Tara Jones (Mike) of Marietta, GA, Joy Mingie (Scott) of Columbia, Jamie Gilligan (Joe) of Asheville, NC and Chuck Haltiwanger, Jr. of Atlanta, GA. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Davis and Katie Belle Sharpe and a brother, Charles Edward Joy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holland Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund, 801 Twelfth Street, Cayce, SC 29033.
