Obituary of Mattie Martin Higgins

Mrs. Mattie Lee Martin Higgins, 87, went home to her Heavenly Father, March 16, 2011. She was born in Richland County, Lugoff, SC on January 1, 1924. She was the sister of six siblings by Fletcher Randolph Martin and Julia Ann Campbell Martin. She was a devout Christian and during her lifetime a member of Concord and Capital View Baptist Churches, with her final membership at Mt. Elon Baptist Church. She worked at K-Mart, the Fort Jackson Blvd. location, from 1972-1984 when she retired. She was widowed by her first husband of 30 years, Wade H. Higgins in 1972 and by Logan Higgins in 2000. She is survived by four children; Stanley (Rosemary) Higgins, Neal (Kaye) Higgins, Van (Linda) Higgins, all of Columbia, SC, and Faye (Robert) Spires of St. Matthews, SC, 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grands, and 2 great, great-grands; also loving sisters, Sara Judd and Edna Poe. She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Emma Spires and Elizabeth Tucker, and 2 brothers Dewitt and Neze Martin. Mrs. Higgins will be at rest and the register may be signed by family and friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC. The graveside service will be at Concord Baptist Church, 2282 Porter Cross Road, Lugoff, SC and officiated by Rev. Lavern Hancock and Rev. Kimmett Lott at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 19, 2011. Following the service visitation will be in the church sanctuary. Pallbearers will be Paschal Higgins, Rick Oberlies, Michael Oberlies, Daniel Oberlies, Ward Dunn and George Bradley. Memorials may be made to Mt. Elon Baptist Church, Music Department, Hopkins, SC, 29061, Palmetto Baptist Hospice or the Diabetes Association.
