Obituary of Betty McReynolds Layson

A funeral service celebrating the life and legacy of Betty Will McReynolds Layson, 81, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Shandon Baptist Church with Reverend Barry Gray and Reverend Jerry Long officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the funeral home. Mrs. Layson died Thursday, May 12, 2011 surrounded by her family. Born December 8, 1929, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Claude Pierce and Mayme Harrison McReynolds. She earned degrees from the Women?s College of the University of North Carolina and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She retired as librarian of A.C. Flora High School, and had also worked for Columbia College and the University of South Carolina. She was an active member of Shandon Baptist Church and The Shepherd?s Center of Columbia and was a former President of the Columbia Council for Internationals. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Allen Layson, of Columbia; sons, Charles Allen Layson and his wife Karyl Ann, of Buford, GA, and Lindsay Harrison Moose and his wife, Terri, of Arlington, VA; daughter, Deborah Layson Elvington and her husband, Fulton, of Huntersville, NC; sister-in-law, Gail Speering and her husband, David, of Ashboro, NC; and12 grandchildren.
