Obituary of ROBERT CLEWIS

Funeral services for Robert Clewis will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2010 at Greenlawn Baptist Church with Dr. Terry Cagle conducting the service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at Greenlawn Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery on Garners Ferry Road. Robert died on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 in the ICU at Providence Hospital after a long illness. Robert was born on January 10, 1932 in Whiteville, North Carolina, the son of Buck and Hattie Ellen Clewis. He grew up in nearby Nakina, N.C. In 1965, he came to Columbia, SC to attend barber school. He began work at Carolina Barber Shop in Five Points in 1966 and retired from there thirty-seven years later. Through the years, Robert made many friends and acquaintances while working in Five Points. He was known for his good humor and tall tales. After retirement, he often made visits to elderly and sick friends to cut their hair. Robert was known for his gardening ability and always kept a meticulous garden and yard. As a young man, Robert served in the National Guard of N.C. and also in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church where he had served as an usher. Robert is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Faye Evans Clewis of the home and his toy poodle, ?Katie Belle?. Also, by his sister-in-law, Carrie Evans; brother-in-law and his wife, Cecil and Barbara Evans; niece and her husband, Rhonda and Johnny Wallace; and Shirley Evans, all of Whiteville, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenlawn Baptist Church. His wife, Faye, would like to thank the nurses and doctors in the ICU of Providence Hospital for their care of her husband during the past seven weeks. Greenlawn Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
