Obituary of CHARLES VANOVER

Graveside service with Full Military Honors for 1st Sgt. Charles Edwin Vanover, US Army (Ret.), 75, of Columbia, will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Percival Road Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends from 10am to 12 noon Tuesday at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road Columbia, SC. Mr. Vanover passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2010. Born in Pikeville, KY on September 22, 1934, he was the son of the late Russell and Russia Vanover. He retired after a 21 year career in the US Army, serving in the Korean War and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He also retired from Richland County after 20 years as Maintenance Supervisor. He was also a Master Mason of the Lower Richland Lodge, and had volunteered his time with the Dorn VA Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret E. Vanover; a daughter, Caroline V. Lindler; four sons, Michael J. Vanover (wife Ellen), Gary L. Vanover (wife Debbie), Kevin C. Vanover (wife Kelly) and Glenn E. Vanover (wife Melanie); a sister, Betty Vanover and brother, Russell Vanover, Jr. (wife Barbara); eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Jonathan, Christopher, Crystal, Amberlee, Brandon, Taylor and Alex; a great-grandchild, Madison; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
