Obituary of Hugh Brown

Mr. Hugh S. Brown, 85, of Columbia, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Ascension House. Mr. Brown was born in Cornelius, N. C., the son of Roy H. Brown and Louise Byers Brown. He was Lutheran and retired as Sergeant First Class from the United States Army in 1964. He was working at Moncrief Army Hospital, Fort Jackson, S.C. at the time of his death as an Air Evac Clerk. Mr. Brown had been at Fort Jackson for most of the past 58 years. He was a member of the Fort Jackson Masonic Lodge and also a member of the Columbia Chapter 59 of the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Mae Mattie Brown, and his brother, Joe Brown. He is survived by his son, Ralph W. Brown, and his wife, Harriet, of Lake Wateree; his daughter, Janet B. Westmoreland, and her husband, Carl, of Greer; and four grandchildren who were the love of his life: William D. Westmoreland and his wife, Jennifer, of Greer; Paul D. Brown, and his wife, Jennifer, of Columbia; Rebecca W. Brosius and her husband, Derrick, of Columbia; and Justin H. Westmoreland of Greer. Mr. Brown is also survived by two brothers: Donald P. Brown, and his wife, Nancy, of Charlotte, N. C. and Kenneth G. Brown (Nick) and his wife, June, of Cornelius, N. C. Services for Mr. Brown will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in the chapel at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, S.C. Entombment will follow at the Mausoleum in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Honorary Pallbearers will be ?second family? - his angels and co-workers from Moncrief Army Hospital. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 P. M. to 8:00 P. M. on Monday, November 29, 2010 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Ascension Hospice, P. O. Box 1367, Irmo, S.C. 29063. We would like to thank the staff and nurses of Ascension Hospice - both those who ministered to him at his house and those who took care of him at Ascension House. Also, we are thankful for the other special caretakers who helped us at his home.
