Obituary of James Lucas

James A. Lucas WEST COLUMBIA—James A. Lucas, 86, of West Columbia, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2011. Born September 28, 1924 in Lexington County, he was a son of the late James Fred and Etta Sharpe Lucas. He was former owner of Lucas Oil Company until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Green Hill Baptist Church in West Columbia. Some of his greatest pleasures were his garden, upkeep of his yard and family gatherings. He served his country as a ship-fitter at Southeastern Navy Yard and Maritime Commission Shipyard in Savannah, GA during World War II, Sept. 1942-April 1945. Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Mary B. Lucas; daughters, Jackie Nichols of Lexington and Gail Knight (Jamie) of West Columbia; son, Jimmy Lucas of Lexington; grandsons, Ryan Nichols (Melissa) of Irmo, Lucas Knight and Adam Knight of West Columbia and great grandson, Jackson Nichols of Irmo. He was preceded in death by brothers, Otis "Doc", Perry and Elzie Lucas; sisters, Gladys Hutto, Lennie Sightler, Velma Rish, Maude Blaylock and grandson, Damon Nichols. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Green Hill Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Alan Adams. Burial will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Green Hill Baptist Church Food Pantry, 1800 Augusta Road, West Columbia, SC 29171.
