Obituary of Hazel Roakes

Hazel Poston Roakes Columbia—Funeral services for Hazel Poston Roakes, 82, of Columbia, will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral of West Columbia. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Leonhardt. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to SPCA, 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29209 or American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia, SC 29201. Mrs. Roakes, widow of Jesse W. Roakes, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Poston and Maggie Morrison Poston Neal. She was a lifetime area resident and a member of Florence Baptist Church and The Young at Heart. She loved her church, travel, animals and her beloved family. Surviving are her children, Sandra Anita Bonds, Debi Brown, Teresa Lynn Nelson, Melvin Roakes and Randy Roakes along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Hazel Marie Hendrix.
