Buddy and Mike,
I was so sorry to hear of your sweet Daddy's death. I remember him well, and he was such a handsome and kind man. I have such fond memories of all of you from our childhood in Union. Phil and I both had a great start to our educations in your Mama's first grade class at Foster Park Elementary. My first memory of your Mama was when Phil was in the class play, and he was Old King Cole. I was about 2 1/2, but we had the play on tape and watched it often! If I ever come across our old reels, I'm going to copy them. I know they're somewhere in Mama's things, and there are some photos, too. I remember your Mama taught us a little song our first day of school called "Little Red Box." It went, "I wish I had a little red box to put my Mother in. I'd take her out and kiss, kiss, kiss, and put her back again..." Then it went, "I wish I had a little red box to put my Daddy in. I'd take him out and hug, hug, hug, and put him back again." Finally, "I wish I had a little red box to put my teacher in. I'd take her out and spank, spank, spank, and put her back again!" She did the motions to the kiss, hug, and spank! Oh, and yes, she did take the naughty boys across her knee and paddle them well! I spent some time with my nose on the board for talking too much, too! I don't think it helped!!! We didn't have PE teachers back then, and she took us skipping through the halls into the cafeteria to get our exercise! I was fortunate to work for a year with Mrs. Garner in '79-80 when she was teaching at Irmo Elementary. That was her last year, and I was one of the speech pathologist assigned to that school. I still remember her going away party when she gave special gifts to all of us. She and your Daddy were very special people, and you were so fortunate to have them in your life for so many years. Please know that I am thinking of you and that your parents are gone but not forgotten. They live on in all of us whose lives they touched. Love, Karen
