Obituary of Doris Brewer

Doris Baker Brewer CAYCE-Doris Baker Brewer, affectionately known as "Mama Doris", passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father June 24, 2011. Born October 24, 1923, in Greenwood, SC, to the late Young Barris Baker and Florrie Creech Baker, Doris was the widow of Harold Brewer. She grew up in the West Columbia area where she graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School and Draughon Business College. She married Harold, the love of her life, July 19, 1947, and they made their home in Cayce, SC, until his passing July 9, 2004. For the past two years Doris lived at the Carolinian Retirement Home in Florence, SC. In addition to her parents and husband, her brother, Ralph Baker, and her sister, Sara Baker McCracken, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Gail B. and Dean Fowler of Florence and Janet B. and Marc Ellis of Hilton Head Island; granddaughters Melody Fowler Shirley and her husband, Seth, of Seneca, Deanne J. Fowler of Mount Pleasant, Ashley L. Ellis of Atlanta, GA; grandson Ryan M. Ellis of Hilton Head; sister Vivian Coleman of Cayce. Nieces, nephews, and many dear friends also survive her. Doris faithfully served her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as a member of First Baptist of West Columbia, Mt. Tabor Lutheran, and Holland Avenue Baptist churches. She used her many talents as a choir member, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and church hostess. Her desire to serve was evident through her ministry to others as she volunteered at God's Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, Women's Prison Ministry, and Washington Street Methodist Church's soup kitchen. She also served in various offices of the Cayce-West Columbia Women's Club, Women's Missionary Union, and the Metallic Club. Doris chose to work part-time so she would be home with her daughters. She was employed at Marion Park Insurance Agency, T&T Sporting Goods, and her most fulfilling position was daycare director at First Baptist Church of West Columbia. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2011 at Holland Avenue Baptist Church in West Columbia, conducted by Rev. Charles Wilson and Rev. Paul Aebischer, with burial to follow at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Pallbearers will be Gerald Baker, Bill Coleman, Steve Krietemeyer, Ryan Ellis, Seth Shirley, and Dean Fowler, III. Ave, West Columbia, SC 29169. The family would like to thank Dr. Tripp Jones for his loving care for over 20 years while Doris lived in Cayce, the attentive care of the Surgical Trauma team at McLeod Medical Center in Florence, and the staff at the Carolinian for all they did to help Mama Doris feel at home.
