Obituary of Victor Estaba

Dr. Estaba died peacefully in his home surrounded by immediate family on Friday, July 22, 2011. He was born on April 13, 1915, in Cumana, Venezuela. He was the son of Gregorio Estaba and Rosa de la Carmen Acuña. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 71 years, Carmen, and his three sons Alvaro, Victor Rodrigo and Lahiri and wives (Dora, Karen and Leah, respectively) and his two granddaughters Ana Carolina and Kaitlynn. Victor was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters. He graduated as a medical doctor from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1940, later specializing in gastroenterology. He began his career in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela serving as a municipal physician in the alpine town of La Azulita. In 1945, he served the US army as a physician with the UNRRA in Germany, treating displaced war victims. He returned to Venezuela in 1947, after post graduate training in Radiology in NY, and started a gastroenterology practice in Caracas. To edify his knowledge, in 1966, he applied and was accepted for a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at a Yale affiliated hospital in Connecticut (Norwalk). He was well received by his peers there and was offered various jobs throughout the east coast, landing in Bridgeport, W.Va. in 1967. In 1969, while still practicing fulltime, he accepted a position as a Clinical Assistant Professor at West Virginia University. In 1972, he took a job with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia, SC, where he retired in 1987. In addition to his passion for the practice of medicine, Dr. Estaba also loved classical music, photography and traveling. We will surely miss him and all the wonderful stories that he loved to tell of his colorful and adventurous life. A private graveside ceremony for Dr. Victor Estaba, M.D. will be held for family and close friends at Greenlawn Memorial Park on Leesburg Road, Monday, July 25, 2011.
