Obituary of Jack Kirk

Jack Roe Kirk, 76, of Litchfield Beach, SC and Hendersonville, NC died peacefully on August 17, 2011 at Elizabeth House, Hendersonville, NC after an extended battle with cancer. He was born on October 26, 1934 in Saint Charles, VA to Doyle and Lennie Kirk. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 12:30pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Full Military Honors and Burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2011 from 5-7pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home. Jack proudly served his country for 35 years in the Army and Army Reserves. He served as Command Sergeant Major of the 120th Army Reserve Command. His last assignment was Command Sergeant Major of Third US Army, which was the highest position held by an Army Reservist. He retired in 1992 from the US Postal Service after 33 years of service. His postal career began in Columbia, SC and included executive positions in Hendersonville, NC, Philadelphia, PA and Cincinnati, OH. Jack was affectionately referred to as ?Pop? by his family and when asked, he always told his friends that ?today is the best day of my life.? He loved coaching his son?s baseball teams and enjoyed remodeling his family homes. He also served as President of the East Columbia Jaycees. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Georgetown, SC. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; sons, Jack II and wife, Barrie of Columbia; Michael and wife, Melody of Lexington; Trenton and wife, Shelley of Mt. Pleasant; step-son Kevin Kyzer and wife, Lisa of Florence; grandchildren, Taylor, Somers, Trenton Jr., Brittan and Leland. He is also survived by his brother, Billy Kirk of Mary, TN and was predeceased by his brother Wayne Kirk.
