Obituary of Mattie Summers

Mattie Haley Summers WEST COLUMBIA—Funeral services for Mattie Haley Summers, 89, of West Columbia, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 15, 2011 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Officiating will be Rev. Larry D. Sharpe, Sr. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Ms. Summers, friend and former wife of Rev. Marvin Wheeler Summers, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2011. Born in Manning, SC, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Haley and Ida Evelyn Cubbage Haley. She was retired from Olympia Mill and Tapp's Department Store, and an extremely talented seamstress. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle, a faithful Christian, devoted to the Lord and believer in the message of Malachi 4:5-6. She shared the light of God's Word as a talented vocalist, who sang with a gospel trio, frequently heard on the radio in the 40's and 50's. She had a smile for all she met and her optimism allowed her to always find the silver lining in any cloud. Surviving Ms. Summers are her daughter, Evelyn Summers Sharpe (Rev. Larry D. Sharpe, Sr.); a sister, Lee Frierson; a brother, Richard Haley (Doris); grandchildren, Tina S. Tyler (Mark), Rachel S. Cathey (Christopher), Larry "David" Sharpe, Jr. (Dana), John M. Summers, Jr. (Brenda), Jeffrey S. Summers (Kim), Jason I. Summers (Charla), Ray Summers (Charlene), Cindy Edwards (Ricky), Lisa S. Barfield, Dwayne Summers, and Rachel M. Epperson (Jeremy); 16 great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Jean Summers, Peggy Summers, and Janis Summers; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sons, David F. Summers and John M. Summers; a sister, Retha Emily Luke and a brother, James Haley. The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers of NHC Lexington and Tri-County Hospice.
