Obituary of D. Fletcher

D. Eugene "Dick" Fletcher, Jr. SPRINGDALE: Graveside service for D. Eugene "Dick" Fletcher, Jr., 84, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2011, at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, officiated by Chaplain Chris Johnson. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday evening, September 18, 2011, at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to Trinity Baptist Church, 2003 Charleston Hwy., Cayce, SC 29033. Mr. Fletcher went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 15, 2011. Born in Concord, NC, he was a son of the late Doris Eugene Fletcher, Sr., and Eula Nash Fletcher. He was a graduate of University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Business Education. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service as Senior Chief Petty Officer, where he served in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. His last tour of duty was at the Naval ROTC Unit at the University of South Carolina. Mr. Fletcher was a member of the USN Fleet Reserve Association - Branch 202. He was a member and 32 degree Master Mason of Sinclair Lodge AFM 154, West Columbia and Jamil Temple, Columbia, SC; Past President of Southeast Shrine Clown Association and Director of Jamil Temple Clown Unit. He was a member and former Sunday School teacher for the men's class of Trinity Baptist Church, Cayce, SC. Mr. Fletcher was a also a former Boy Scouts of America Lexington County Scout Commissioner; and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution Col. Thomas Taylor Chapter of Columbia, SC. He served four years on the Springdale Town Council. He was employed in Engineering Dept. of University of South Carolina and was the former owner/operator of Fletcher's Electronic Sales and Service Company, Springdale, SC. Most all he was the best Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Friend in the whole wide world! Surviving are: his spouse, Gracie Powell Fletcher of Springdale; daughters, Lisa Allison (Darren) of Lexington and Debbie Sears (James) of Chapin; son, Greg Yancey (Rebekah) of Forest Acres and Honorary Son, Wallace A. Crosby, of Springdale; sister, Odelia Spears of Concord, NC; nephew, Barry Spears (Kim) and great nephew and niece Jared and Corey of Concord, NC; grandchildren, Joseph Green (Dana) of Prosperity, Crystal Hoover (Mark) of Chapin, Marcus Yancey of Columbia, Michael Allison of Lexington; great grandchildren, Cody, Austin, Kayla, Andrew and Gracen. Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Fletcher and sister-in-law, Margaret Fletcher. Special thanks to Community Home Care and Hospice of Columbia, the staff of S.C.
