Obituary of Colonel Edward Rice

Colonel Arnold Edward Rice, U.S. Army LEESVILLE: Colonel Arnold Edward Rice, U.S. Army, Leesville, South Carolina, 93, went peacefully to be with Lord land his wife, Elaine of over 70 years, September 21, 2011. Colonel Rice was born December 15, 1917, in Grand Forks, North Dakota where he graduated from The University of North Dakota and is enshrined in the Military Hall of Fame. Arnie is predeceased by his parents, James and Mattie Rice; one sister and five brothers. Colonel Rice served in the United States Army for more than 30 years prior to his retirement and was a 40 year resident of Lake Murray. He served as a Combat Infantryman in both World War II and the Korean War. He served in many assignments both in the United States and around the World, his final duty station at Fort Jackson, SC as G-4, Director of Industrial Operations and Comptroller from July 1965 until September 1970. Colonel Rice's awards and decorations include: The Combat Infantry Badge, Legion of Merit, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Bronze Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and numerous other decorations including awards from the Republic of China. Colonel Rice is survived by his daughter, Cathy Prince of Dallas, TX; his son, Bill Rice and his wife Debbie of Argyle, TX; granddaughter, Kat Rice of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, FL; and grandson, Midshipman Eric Rice of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. Viewing will be at 2 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011, followed by services at Thompson Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Road (U.S. Hwy 1) Lexington, SC 29073, (803) 996-1023. Interment will be at a later date at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
