Obituary of Leonard Whelchel

Leonard E. "Smiley" Whelchel WEST COLUMBIA: Graveside service for Leonard E. "Smiley" Whelchel, 91, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at Celestial Memorial Gardens. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the Bob Mooneyhan Scholarship Fund at Airport High School, 1315 Boston Ave., West Columbia, SC 29170. Mr. Whelchel died Sunday, September 25, 2011. Born in Gaffney, SC, he was a son of the late Ed and Lydia Whelchel. Mr. Whelchel worked at the naval shipyard in Charleston, SC, then Bonitz Construction were he retired after 25 years of service. He was a man of many talents and knowledge which he shared with family and friends over his life time. Smiley always said "he could fix anything but a broken heart" but had soothing words for that. Surviving are his special friends at Mooneyhan Auto and Bill Mooneyhan and family. Special thanks to Susan and other nurses at National Healthcare for their love and kind care over the years.
