Obituary of Jack Bolt

A funeral service celebrating the life of Jack William Bolt, Sr. (Ret. Major, U.S. Army), 96, of West Columbia will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, 4205 Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29206 with full military honors and interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of the service on Thursday morning at the church. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256 in Jack?s memory. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements. Mr. Bolt went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. He was born in Greenwood County, SC to the late James T. Bolt and Bertha Wells Bolt. Major Bolt retired from the United States Army in 1958 after 28 years of dedicated service to our country, which he served in World War II and The Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in Yoju, Korea on February 24, 1951. Major Bolt received other decorations and citations to include The Regular Army Commission, The Bronze Star Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, United Nations Service Medal and The Army Commendation Ribbon. Mr. Bolt retired as the Bulk Plant Supervisor with Gulf Oil Corporation, Columbia, SC in 1974. He was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, chairman of the usher board, and a member of the Edwards Class. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 71 years, Carmeta Upchurch Bolt; a son, Jack W. Bolt, Jr. and his wife Vikki Bolt; two daughters, Ann Bolt Whaley and her husband Frank Whaley, Johnie Bolt Smith and her husband Taylor Smith; 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A special thanks is extended to Mary Kessler, Johnnie Mae Wells, Phyllis Brown and Hospice of Tri-County for their care and support during the illness of our loved one, Jack William Bolt, Sr.
