Obituary of Christine Lucus Meares

Christine Elizabeth Lucas Meares WEST COLUMBIA: Services for Christine Elizabeth Lucas Meares, 93, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, West Columbia, SC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Fellowship Class or to Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church. Mrs. Meares, devoted wife of sixty-four years to the late Leslie Elliott Meares, died Sunday, February 5, 2012. Born in McBee, SC, she was the daughter of the late James Benjamin and Florence Lucas. She was valedictorian of her McBee High School graduating class and attended Lander College. Mrs. Meares was a former staff member of Aiken Junior High and St. Angela Academy in Aiken. A faithful member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, she had earlier in life been a member of McBee Methodist Church and Williston Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. Mrs. Meares was also a member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and Minnie Shull Circle at Mt. Hebron. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Amedisys Hospice and especially to Mrs. Laura Mize, her nurse, and to her caregiver, Mrs. Sibble Brooks, both of whom showed extraordinary compassion and gave exceptional care. Dearly beloved by family and friends, she is survived by daughters, Christine Elizabeth "Betsy" Chitty (Jerry) of West Columbia and Nancy L. Meares (Rev. Raymond Barrow) of Lexington; grandchildren, Michael Scott Chitty (Rebecca) of West Columbia, Liz Chitty Castles (Trey) of West Columbia, Jason C. Littlefield (Melissa) of Leesville, and Matthew P. Hodges (Natasha) of Lexington; four great-grandsons, Joe Blair "Tradd" Castles, IV, Sanders Lucas Castles, Sullivan Elliot Castles, and Lucas Sawyer Castles of West Columbia, and one great-granddaughter, Cara Elizabeth Hodges of Lexington; sister, Margie Lucas of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.
