Obituary of Betty Ann Bourne

Mrs. Betty Ann Bessinger Bourne, 89, of West Columbia, died Tuesday May 14, 2024, at the Oakleaf Village Assisted Living and Memory Care. Born April 23, 1935, in Georgetown, SC, she was a daughter of the late Charles Leroy Bessinger and Inez Hightower Bessinger. Betty graduated from Winyah High School in 1953 where she played Basketball and was Homecoming Queen. She furthered her education at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she obtained her degree in Nursing. She began her nursing career at Bamberg County Memorial Hospital, she then moved to Baptist Hospital to be a part of the Medical and Orthopedics units. Betty furthered her career by being part of the team that developed the hospital’s Cancer Institute Program that eventually transitioned into the South Carolina Oncology Associates until her retirement. Betty never met a stranger, she loved and served her church, family, and patients unconditionally.

Betty was married to her late husband, Bernard O. Bourne, Jr., a friend since age 5, on September 29, 1956. She was a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia. Survivors are her children, Elise Inez Pauley (Michael) of Lexington, Bernard Oscar Bourne III (Amy) of Lexington, Mary Angela Woods (Philip) of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, and Charles Kevin Bourne (Virginia) of Lexington; brother-in-law, Benjamin Jacobs Bourne (Carolyn) of Beverly Hills, Florida; sister-in-law, Barbara Bourne Shives (William) of Blythewood; her 18 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty was predeceased by her brothers, William Leroy Bessinger, James C. Bessinger (Zola) and William D. Bessinger, Jr.; her sisters, Mildred Hajek (Edward), Thelma Harrison (Jeff), Ruth Boatwright (Owen), Helen Demaris Bessinger and Mamie Bass; and her father-in-law, Bernard O. Bourne; mother-in-law, Elise Jacobs Bourne; sister-in-law, Marion Elise Bourne; beloved dog, Angel and cat, Oscar.

The funeral service will be held at 2 PM, Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, with burial following in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 1PM.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Oakleaf Village Assisted Living and Memory Care along with the Crescent Hospice for all the love, care and compassion given to Betty and her family.
