Babern Jones

Obituary of Babern C. Jones

Babern C. Jones was born in Vivian, Louisiana, on August 18, 1935. He was the son of Rush and Mary Jones. He spent most of his childhood in Kilgore, Texas and enjoyed the simple life of rodeos and country music. In high school, Babern played football, basketball, and ran track. He also performed in the Texas All State Choir.

He was very proud to be called a Veteran as he served his country in the United States Army. Afterwards, he was employed as a comptroller for Lanier Construction, Clark Heating and Air, and LAD Construction Company.

He was a dedicated man to his friends, work, and family. He served as a choir director and a deacon for many years at Earlewood Baptist Church and most recently was a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia.

He was an outstanding musician and songwriter, writing songs for Sonny James and Marie Osmond. He had a beautiful bass voice and recorded songs of his own. His children can still sing every word of his many songs. He enjoyed countless musical festivals, performances, concerts, and Louisiana Hayrides with many well-known musical artists, including Sonny James and the Southern Gentlemen, Slim Whitman, Mickey Gilley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Jimmy Swaggert to name a few. Recently, he reflectively told his family, “I’ve been lots of places; I’ve seen lots of people. It’s been a blast. And it’s been a ride.”

Babern will be remembered for his musical talent, entertaining personality, and kindheartedness as he would give you anything he had. We will miss him deeply.

Babern was preceded by his parents, his brother, Marvin Cook, and sister, Wanda Jones. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Jones of Cayce; three daughters, Donna Hunter (Paul) of Lexington, Vicki Traufler of Lexington, and Cheryl Vello (David) of Lexington; five grandchildren, Ashley Hunter, Adam Hunter (Tiffany), Joshua Traufler, Lauren Hayes (Sam), and Matthew Vello; and one great-grandson, Walker Allen Hayes born just a few days ago on November 25, 2023.
