Obituary of Marion Sims Smith

Marion Sims Smith, 92, of Columbia, SC, died September 15, 2023.  Born in Waterloo, Laurens County, on March 31, 1931.  He was the son of the late Thomas Fleming Smith and Lois Sims Smith.  He Graduated from Laurens High School with honors.  After serving in the U.S. Army, Marion became a Claims Adjuster serving in this capacity with several nationally known companies.  He retired in 1992.  He was active in Shandon Baptist Church, participating in mission construction trips.

He loved playing golf and made many friends through this activity.  His real love, however, was studying and teaching God’s word.  He believed every word he taught and was distraught when anyone used God’s name in vain.  He was also a strong believer in Family and worked hard to build a strong one of which he could be proud.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Barrentine Smith; three children and two stepchildren: Thomas Rosamond Smith, James Marion Smith (Lori), and Marianne Smith Shields, Jonathan Taylor, Angela Taylor Harrison (Cal Harrison); and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Smith will be held Tuesday, September 19^th at 12:00 pm in Shandon Baptist Church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shandon Baptist Church Missions, 5250 Forest Dr. Columbia, SC 29206.
