Obituary of Betty A. Smith
In Loving Memory of Betty A. Smith
Betty A. Smith, daughter of the late Walter Selby and Melba Selby, was born April 24, 1933, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She moved to Irmo, SC in 1972 and would live out her life in the Midlands of South Carolina.
Betty quietly departed this life on Thursday, August 31, 2023, in Columbia, SC. She was predeceased by her husband, Glenn R. Smith, Jr., next to whom she will be laid to rest.
Her life will forever be cherished by her children, Shelley Price, Connie McCartha, Mike Edelmayer (Michelle), Mark Edelmayer (Pam), Cathy Sovde, and Terry Smith (Andrea); her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Ma Betty”, Chris, Jason, Dustin, Sara, Anthony, Christina, John, Kathryn, Courtney, Philip, Robert, Aaron, David, Deanna, Jessica, and Montana; along with her many beloved great-grandchildren.
A single mom raising her children on her own, Betty worked tirelessly to provide for her family while instilling a strong work ethic and independent spirit in all her children. Her children most admired her strength and ability to have a positive attitude in the face of adversity. Betty loved to garden and shared her plants with anyone who took an interest. Most of all, Betty loved her family and cherished the time spent together. Her final wish was for her children to maintain these bonds, a wish we wholeheartedly intend to honor.
Betty will be laid to rest in a private burial service held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in her honor to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
Betty’s story is one of love, dedication, and unbreakable bonds. As we bid farewell to our remarkable mother, we celebrate a life well-lived and carry forward her legacy of family, hard work, and boundless love.
