Obituary of Barbara Price
Barbara Anginet Jordan Price, 90, devoted servant of our Lord Jesus Christ, was called home on July 13, 2023. She was born in Wrightsville, GA, to the late T. E. Jordan and Lila Parker Jordan.
Barbara was an exceptional student in school. She was valedictorian of her class at Wrightsville High School, as well as cheerleader and Senior Class President. Her love of school and respect for many of her teachers inspired her to that profession.
She attended Georgia State College for Women (GSCW) majoring in education and Spanish, with plans to become a high school Spanish teacher. She began her teaching career at Sand Bar Ferry Elementary School (she looked too young to teach high school) in North Augusta, and later at Roy E. Rollins Elementary in Augusta.
In 1961, the family moved to Cayce, SC, and Barbara began substituting in Lexington District 2. In 1968, she was offered a position at Brookland-Cayce High School teaching junior and senior English. She also taught courses in creative writing, vocabulary, and journalism, and was advisor for the B-C Highlights newspaper and for the Laureate, the student literary publication.
After the retirement of Miss Marguerite McCaskill, Barbara’s mentor and long-time head of the English Department, Barbara was offered that position and held it until her retirement. Vibrant, funny, compassionate and kind, her entire career she was an inspiration to her students and fellow teachers.
Barbara retired from B-C in 1992, but remained active. She participated in a mentoring program between Lexington Baptist Association and B-C School District, which supplied tutors in elementary schools. She also was a teacher in an English as a Second Language program, teaching immigrants to speak English. She liked to read, quilt, and sew.
Barbara is survived by three daughters, Angie Hydrick, of Cayce, SC, Donna Richards, of Marietta, GA, and Tressa Oswalt (Robert), of Lubbock, TX. She is also survived by her sisters, Kathryn Powell, of Wrightsville, GA, and Jan Stevens (Eddie), of Warner Robbins, GA, as well as her brothers, Joe Jordan (Marcia) of Wrightsville, GA and John Jordan (Sheila) of Sardis, MS. She lovingly leaves behind five grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, daughter, Cynthia Price, brother, Ed Jordan, and son-in-law, Buddy Hydrick.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 21, 2023 at 2:00 at State Street Baptist Church in Cayce. Family will receive friends at 12:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will be at a later date in Wrightsville, GA.
Memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church, 1420 State Street, Cayce, SC 29033, the Brookland Cayce High School Education Foundation, P.O. Box 2482, West Columbia, SC 29171, or the charity of one’s choice.
