Obituary of Sylvia E. Brayboy

Columbia- Sylvia Elvington Brayboy, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her family at home on Friday, June 23, 2023.

Sylvia was born on June 9, 1940, in Florence, South Carolina to the late Garnett and Gertilee (Goodwin) Elvington. She attended University High School and was a longtime member of Rosewood Baptist Church.

Sylvia was very family oriented and took great pride in being a homemaker and caring for her family. Through the years she also cared for the children of family and friends in her home and assisted with the children’s church programs.

Mawmaw, as she was known, enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She enjoyed square dancing, her westerns, especially John Wayne movies and gospel music. Sylvia was an avid baker, she enjoyed making cakes for her friends and even made wedding cakes for all her daughters and many grandchildren. Sylvia never met a stranger and loved getting on Facebook to keep up with many of her friends. She gave unconditional love to all.

In addition to her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of 64 years, James, she leaves to cherish her memory, five daughters: Cynthia Johnson (Mark), Theresa Harris (Lee), Pamela Wilkins (Garner), Tracy Coulter- Leafdahl (Kyle) and Natalie Amos (Stuart); twelve grandchildren, Shawn Hartgrove, Linda Grimes, Brittany Baker, Whitney Calhoun, Scott Wilkins, Daniel Harris, Corey Johnson, Alecia Cooper, Winter Coulter, Staley Coulter, Mia Amos, Preston Amos; twelve great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her siblings, Donald Elvington (Sandra) and Jack Elvington (Judy). In addition to her parents, her brother, James G. Elvington precedes her in death.
