Obituary of Peggy B. Whitaker

Peggy Jean Booth Carter Whitaker passed away on June 20, 2023, at her home in Lexington, SC.  She was born on April 8, 1942 in Horry County, SC.  With the exception of two years in the 1980s when she lived in Melbourne, FL, since 1968, Peggy made her home in the Columbia area.

Peggy was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy Booth of Horry County, SC.  She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Wayne L. Whitaker, her daughters Angie Carter of Lexington, SC, Tonya Whitaker of Georgetown, KY and Julie Whitaker of Los Cruces, NM and her son, Lee Carter, of Lexington, SC.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kevin Carter (Cassie), Michael Puffer, Cole Carter (Molly), and Caroline Carter.  Peggy sadly will not be here for the birth of her twin great grandsons who are expected in October.  Peggy is also survived by two nieces, Carla McGaha and Heather Gunter and her sister-in-law, Deborah Adams Booth Finnell. 

The pall bearers will be her three grandsons, Kevin Carter, Michael Puffer, Cole Carter; her son Lee Carter; Phil Whitaker and Lee Zeruth.     

In 1971, Peggy started a long and distinguished career in banking.  Through new opportunities and acquisitions, Peggy worked for American Bank, Southern Bank, Sun Bank, First Union, Security Federal and South Trust where she retired from in 2000. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church located at 1205 Old Cherokee Road, Lexington, SC 29072.  The burial will take place in the church cemetery immediately following the service.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. 

Peggy was allergic to flowers. At her request, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
